Minor ethical quandary

This is, admittedly, a small thing. A mechanic did a small favor for me a while ago, and I tried to return the favor by giving him some easy business. While he's a nice guy, he turned out to be a lousy mechanic. hence my small quandary.

Here's the story, and a poll I posted in a motorcycling forum:

  1. I'd say forget about it and move on. He obviously doesn't remember you (and surely doesn't expect anything) and you've already dealt with it elsewhere.

  2. Like Joe Walsh said, "Walk away."

Either way he is not worth your time. As you told about the stuck lug nuts, I immediately thought of an extension for leverage. But perhaps that's just me due to the fact that I went thru a period of a few years of high bp and weakness and am used to looking for ways to get things done using little muscle.

The "mechanic" should have used leverage immediately.

As to service: Any person in the service business expects to help people for free as a way of enticing people to come back for more.

He didn't even help you at that time and then tried to con you on a brake job.

Here's why I think he tried to con you: his answer was too fast, he didn't check out your brakes, and he Dramatized the outcome of no repair. He's not just a lousy mechanic, he's a crook.

I worked as a mechanic in my teens and early 20s; I have dealt with mechanics for 30 years since then.

I thought your question was going to be: "Do I publicize the crook?"

And if so, how widely. You owe him nothing. Plus he is not worth your time. He owes you for attempted fraud. Jerk.

Sometimes Fred, you are toooo nice. But I sure appreciate you.

The world needs more people like you.
