"LONDON (Reuters) - Council chiefs in Birmingham [UK] were left red-faced when they mistakenly used a picture of their U.S. namesake in Alabama on thousands of official leaflets...."
I was born and partially raised in Birmingham (England, that is). It was the heart of the British Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. One thing it had which you had to look hard to find was an extensive network of canals that reached into the north and south of England. But to find them you literally had to locate a door in the wall before you could wander around. Now all the walls have been demolished and the canals exposed to everyone.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for the council leaders as they have rebuilt Birmingham well on the whole, but I've only been up there once in 12 years. Nevertheless, Brummies do talk funny! They have one of the most distinctive regional accents in the country.
As an adoptive Brummie, I have found this story very amusing - and rather embarrassing. Brum has the reputation for being Britain's second city in size but not in attitude, never quite gaining the kudos. This story just reinforces that.
ReplyDeleteAnd for a bit of local colour Fred, try "Orlroight, our kid?" for an alternative blog title :-)
