Easy desktop-shutdown options

Here's the lead (or "lede" in journalism-speak) for this week's LangaList; my column in the WindowsSecrets Newsletter:

Wanted: easy desktop-shutdown options

By Fred Langa

Tools built into every version of Windows let you create customized shutdown shortcuts.

It's easy to add shutdown, reboot, suspend, hibernate, or other options to your desktop — if that's what you want or need.

In search of simpler Windows shutdowns

Tom Wilson is looking for a more convenient way to shut down his PC:

  • "Can you help me? I want a desktop-shutdown option for Windows (XP SP3) with a cancelable delay so I have, say, 60 seconds to change my mind. I see this on Apple computers and am jealous!"
No need for jealousy, Tom. There are about a dozen different ways to do the same thing in Windows. In fact, you can shut down your PC from a desktop icon, or reboot, or put your PC into standby or hibernation mode. To coin a phrase: Have it your way!

The rest of that item goes on to show several manual and automatic ways to get configurable, customizable shutdown, suspend and hibernation options available via a desktop icon.

Elsewhere in my column:

  • Attempt to create recovery disk fails; cryptic error message while creating a backup
  • Time is quickly running out on Windows 7 RC
  • Comparing Internet-throughput speed tests
As usual, my column is only part of the issue; 6 other authors also contributed this week.
