If you overlay this (wikipedia) map of unemployment rate on top of this, I see a good deal of correlation. YMMV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_unemployment_rate
I don't know if it's statistically significant, but it would seem to make sense. Lower employment, lower wages, less people paying taxes.
Wouldn't it be great to increase employment so more of these people would pay more taxes!
I would also like to guess that the red states also tend to be the poorest, but to a lesser correlation.
