Did you notice that the path actually took them from Jerusalem to Bethlehem...where Jesus was born? Kinda makes you think there is some truth to this story.
Well, as the text states, that was using a well-known star, Sirius, as the example. Sirius isn't a "new" star; why would someone randomly decide that the same star that'd been there all throughout human history was suddenly signifying something new?
The other examples show what happens if you pick other objects.
Besides, if you pick *any* celestial object and walk towards a city that you think it's guiding you to, you'll find babies being born there. Nothing unusual or miraculous about it in the least.
Sirius *is* the brightest star in the sky, so it's reasonable to believe that, forced to make a choice, they would pick that one. At least much more likely than any other random star.
The article also implies that it's absurd to take any of those other paths.
And the path from Jerusalem to Bethlehem isn't a straight path. It seems to me that the path lends more credence to it.
