Iconic photo taken 45 years ago, tomorrow:

This was the first widely-published image that most people saw, that showed Earth as the small, isolated, vulnerable place it really is.

(There had been a few whole-earth photos taken before by satellites, but they were seen mostly by a tiny audience of space- and weather-geeks.)

But this photo made it into the general public consciousness, and provided visual proof that the earth wasn't the vast place of infinite resources that unaided human senses see it.

The photo actually changed the thinking of millions, and has been credited with igniting the nascent Environmental movement.
