There is one other person with my name (first and last). However Gail is 285th most popular name, 96.3% of us being female. My last name is not quite so common...14700th most popular.
I gotta be dubious about these results. Yes, Rogers George in that order is certainly uncommon, but my son, an adult, happens to have my exact name (he s the fourth) and I know of a fellow in AR or MO with the same name, different middle initial. So there!
Not too accurate :( I put in my brother's name (he's named after our father) and it says only one is in the U.S. Hmmm, wonder which of the two they think is dead--I know both are living.
I feel sorry for the "John Smith" people out there ... apparently there are 50,394 of them in the U.S. alone!
No surprise that "Smith" is the 1st most popular last name. I assumed that "John" was also the 1st most popular first name, but it's 2nd.
When I got to wondering what the most popular first name was, I found this site:
http://www.namestatistics.com/
As it turns out, "James" is #1 and there are 51,084 people in the U.S. named "James Smith" or 690 more than the John Smith's ... which really isn't by much.
Either way, it must get very confusing at Smith family reunions!

ReplyDeleteOops. They are not absolutely certain I exist: "There are

or fewer people with my name in the U.S.A." Thanks Fred.
sheesh
ReplyDeletelike Bob Seger said, "...feel like a number."
3rd most popular and 2nd most popular on my names
so i tried my "other" name
now there only 900+ of us
and if we screened it by age 40+
i might be fairly unique
Fred, your column is fun. Thanks!

Slightly concerned as it says 99.9% of people with Barrie as First Name are female. Not sure about the USA, but here in England we mostly male!
ReplyDeleteBarrie
Only 1 "Fred Langa" ... Are you really sure about that?
ReplyDeleteAccording to the site: "... There may be fewer people with this name, or none at all".
So, it's quite possible that you really don't exist and have been a figment of the Fred Langa Society's collective imagination all these years!
Or maybe you do exist but only as bits and bytes somewhere "out there" on the internet ...? (queue "Twilight Zone" music) ;-)
